Food Review: Taste of Thailand (Yishun)

Took the opportunity to book my parents for dinner on Tuesday since both of them were on leave. It was also an advance ‘celebration’ for Father’s day this coming Sunday =)

I was pretty undecided on where to bring my family for dinner and did a search on Hungrygowhere for eateries in Yishun. Haha aaanddd settled on Taste of Thailand near Chong Pang.

Great choice I think, because the food was nice, and most importantly, CHEAP! Check them out, ALL THESE signature dishes below for just $50! And $50 for 4 people isn’t expensive at all.

.

.

.
Pineapple Fried Rice with pork floss

Personally I don’t like pineapple, but I don’t have any qualms gobbling this pineapple rice at all. We ordered this for $5, replacing white rice, and it was enough for 4 people. Worth it!

.

Deep Fried Grouper with sweet/sour chilli sauce

Also another one of their signature dishes, and I love that chilli! It goes well with everything. Actually I think this dish is good only cuz of the chilli sauce.

.

.

.

Sambal Kangkong

I was expecting more, but this was not great. It was pretty tasteless. I miss kangkong that has a salty sambal taste, but not so spicy.  Where can I get that? Haven’t tried nice sambal kangkong for awhile, seems like standards for such a simple dish has dropped.

.

.

.

Deep fried Sotong

I  don’t like sotong either, cuz it makes me feel like I’m eating rubber. The only sotong I eat is either deep fried (must be those long and thin ones, cannot be too bulky), or the minced sotong on top of a sushi. Haha, but this is good cuz the batter is crunchy! And it goes well with the chilli that came with the fish.

.

.

.

Deer meat with spring onions

Soft and chewy =) Haha my mom says this is not really deer meat, it’s just pork which is specially seasoned, so the taste and texture is slightly different from pork. It is more tender. However I don’t know how true it is. Do you all know whether restaurants in Singapore sell real deer meat or not??

.

.

.

Fish maw soup

I think standard for this dropped, I remember when they were previously at Sembawang Shopping Centre, the soup was more savoury. Another reason why I chose to go to Taste of Thailand is because my parents brought us to the old outlet often when I was little and we would always order this soup without fail. So it’s kinda nostalgic.

Overall, I was pretty satisfied and so freaking filled to the brim after dinner. And luckily we reached a little after 7pm and walked right straight in. Then after we sat down, a queue formed outside the restaurant. Heehee. It always happens with Koi too. :P

Plus this outlet left us a good impression because our bill was actually $52 and my dad and I were fighting to pay (see who’s faster!!), and the boss saw and just took my dad’s $50 and charged us just $50. Zzz happy that they gave us a small discount but sad that I lost to my dad and he wouldn’t take my $50 after that. So does it still counted as Father’s Day gift?

So now they are located at the industrial park liao ah… I boycott them long time liao. Reason, they say no more ordering of food at 9pm and there were 2 of us. But as we left, a group of 6 came in, and they are offered seats… so I dunnno what the hell they are thinking of.

Oh I made a mistake, the outlet I went to is located at 701A Yishun Avenue 5 #01-01, this is the one opposite Chong Pang and next to KFC.
Wah it must have been frustrating, If that happened to me I also would boycott them! But which outlet did you go to?
