DIY Tutorial Easy Zippered Pouch with Divider

Hi guys! This is my first full sewing tutorial, so I have chosen something relatively easy. It’s a zippered pouch with a divider inside. When searching online, I found many tutorials teaching how to sew a zippered pouch, but none on one with a divider.  Haha actually I wouldn’t think of adding a divider too, but my Beary Naise customer had requested it! :D I love my customers cuz they challenge me with their requests and I try my best to fulfill them.

This is a picture-filled, step-by-step tutorial on how to make a zippered pouch with divider. I hope it’ll help! :)

So this is how it looks inside, a divider in the middle so contents can be easily separated.

Let’s start!

A) Materials you’ll need.

  • 2 exterior pieces (12cm x 19cm)
  • 2 interior pieces (12cm x 19cm)
  • 1 divider piece (12cm x 19cm)
  • 2 zipper ends (6cm x 6cm)
  • 1 nylon zip (8inches)

My zipper was longer than needed, so I cut it down to the length of the pouch.

Prepare the zipper ends. I ironed the sides in and then in half.

Sew on the zipper ends onto the zipper like this.

And so it’ll look like this!

Now we have to prepare the interior piece with the divider.

Take the divider piece, fold down the top twice and top-stitch. So it creates a neat finishing like this.

After the top of the divider piece has been folded down and sewn, it’ll be shorter than the interior piece. Pin the divider piece and sew down the sides, using an 1/8″ seam allowance.

B) Now we are ready to sew the zipper onto the fabric!

Place one side of the pouch exterior fabric face up. Then place the zipper face down. (see photo).

Then place the interior fabric right side down. I used a plain coloured cloth so it’s not so obvious, but make sure that the divider is facing the right side of the exterior cloth.

Pin the 3 layers together.

Then sew the 3 layers together. Remember to use a zipper foot, it’ll make your life much easier. When you reach the part where the zipper head is blocking the needle, reach inside carefully and pull the zipper head to the other end.

Now we have to sew the other side of the zipper. Place the other side of the exterior piece right side up, then place the zipper right side down again. Like previously, place the interior piece right sides down on top of this fabric sandwich.

After sewing down the other side of the zipper, it’ll look something like this! :D

Do a top-stitch along the zipper so that it creates a nice finishing. It also enforces the zipper and fabric together.

C) The last lap! Sewing the pouch together.

NOW take note of the most important step in this section:

Open the zip halfway and don’t touch it again. Haha. You MUST leave the zip open for the flipping of the pouch later on. Don’t forget this otherwise you’ll have trouble later on.

After opening the zip, flip the exterior sides facing each other, and the interior sides facing each other.

You can see it clearer from here. However, you may notice that the zipper is a little stubborn in laying flat. *One important rule would be to push the zipper teeth to the side of the lining and NOT the exterior.*

Pin down all sides, leaving a gap at the bottom of the interior fabric. We are going to sew along the whole edge with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Remember to leave a gap at the bottom!!

There we go, sew along the edge. When it comes to the zipper part, inch along slowly so the needle can poke through all those layers. Try turning the wheel manually when it gets hard to puncture the layers.

D) Finishing the last lap!

Trim off the corners so that they won’t pucker up when you flip them right side out.

Through the hole formed by the gap in the bottom of the interior fabric, reach in and pull out the exterior fabric. You’ll see something like this. Continue. You’ll be glad that you left that zip open. XD

After pushing out all the corners, and ironing, you’ll get this!

Now it’s time for the LAST step – sew up the gap in the lining.

Fold in the lining fabric and sew up the gap by top-stitch.
