ZoeReverie: Phenomenal Woman

ZoeReverie posts tell of the author’s contemplations about life, and are often written to inspire herself. How narcissistic. Lol.

Nothing lifts me up more than powerful words that inspire; and then there are words that soothe the aching soul. I found the much-needed respite in two books borrowed from the library. They were definitely not the usual kind of books that I’d cart home – the usual being sewing and craft books – but I learned so much about people and history, and broadened my vision and understanding of life from them.

Maya Angelou And Still I Rise Poems

| I Have A Dream: The Speeches That Changed History by Ferdie Addis and And Still I Rise by Maya Angelou. |

The speeches book was so good, I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in how world events panned out chronologically- the world wars, civil wars, victory and defeat speeches that were spoken by leaders themselves – without having to bore over dry history textbooks. The charged speeches transported me back to the times, kept me on the edge; at times I imagined myself orating and felt the compelling words roll off my tongue. In addition, the author included his interpretation of the situation under which the speeches were made, and the consequences each had. Very gripping.

But it is the selection of poems by Maya Angelou that left me stirred. Here are 2 of my favourites – Phenomenal Women and Still I Rise!

. .

Not sure about you, but I felt pretty empowered by the poems. Struggling with insecurities as a woman in today’s modern society is as real as ever, myself included. There’s pressure coming from every direction: family, friends, colleagues, even strangers on social media etc… People hold expectations on you that they don’t for themselves, and that’s just crazy! Talk about double standards. And if you give in to that, it’ll eat you away from the inside.

Sometimes it works to just spend some ‘alone time’ or with someone who sees the bigger picture, away from all the madness. Reconnect with your inner voice that’s being drowned by all that noise, and indulge in a little self-lovin’. You deserve to be loved by you too. Don’t forget that.

Stay strong, girls!
