Adult Acne and Hyperpigmentation!! Review and Results of BBL and CO2 Fractional Laser

Hi ladies, I thought that I had left my acne days behind after graduating from Uni; it’s one of those things that you’re supposed to grow out of! Well, I did enjoy a couple of years with pretty good skin from age 23 to 26, where pimples only pop out near the time of the month, and usually flatten after my period ends.

But recently, I’m finding that my pimples are more aggressive and persistent – more of them pop up, and stay for longer periods of time. And they are all aggregated around my chin area! A little bothered, I did some googling and found that acne on the chin area could be caused by either digestive or hormonal issues.

If that’s the case then it makes a bit of sense. I’m not gonna deny that work has been a little stressful, and coupled with my new-found love for Ma La Xiang Guo… Sigh!

I was really struggling with my adult-onset acne and feeling rather helpless, when Healthsprings Laser and Aesthetics Clinic contacted and invited me down for a consultation with Dr. Soh Lea Sar, Founder and Director. By that time, my scars were already quite bad and had been plaguing me for a while that I was unsure if anything could help. I went with an open mind, and hoped for the best.

Consultation with Dr Soh Lea Sar

Dr. Soh comes across as pleasant and down-to-earth, with an air of calm rootedness. Usually I get self-conscious when talking about my skin condition, but conversation with her was easy, and I felt at ease. She took a look at my skin and pointed out 5 areas of concerns that she could help with.

  1. Freckles on my cheeks
  2. Overall uneven skin tone, with a mix of dark, light, and redness
  3. Large pore size on nose
  4. Active acne on chin
  5. Dark acne scars on chin

She made sure that I was okay with removing my freckles (just in case I didn’t want to!) because some people do love and embrace their freckles. For me, I think I can do without them. Haha.

So, I was prescribed Forever Young Broadband Light Laser (BBL) on the whole face for hyperpigmentation, active acne, and overall brightening of skin tone. In addition, I would be given localised doses of CO2 Fractional Laser targeted on my nose and chin for large pore size and scarring.

BBL (Broadband Light) Laser Treatment Procedures

I was then ushered into the treatment room, and several aestheticians prepped me for the procedures.

Numbing Cream for 30mins

A strong numbing cream was first applied on my entire face so that I wouldn’t feel too much of the zapping sensation later on. It was so effective that my face felt rubbery after awhile. It was such a peculiar feeling! Haha.

Application of cool gel

I had to wear safety goggles to protect my eyes from the bright light during the procedure. I look like Ultraman! A cool gel is then applied to the treatment area, which in my case, is the whole face.

Dr Soh administers BBL

The light therapy is delivered in pulses via the applicator that Dr Soh is holding onto. As my eyes were blocked by the goggles, I really appreciated that she announced when she was going to start administering the light pulses so I had time to brace myself. I thought it was going to sting, but it was totally painless.

Dr. Soh went over my face twice (and some parts thrice) with the BBL, which I thought was very thorough!

Immediately after Forever Young Broadband Light Laser (BBL) treatment

From this close-up photo, you can see that my pigmentation spots were several shades darker immediately after the BBL procedure. This is great, because those spots have been “targeted” and will fall off my face over the next few days! There is also an overall brightening of my skin tone.

*After-care instructions for BBL*

There is hardly any downtime for BBL as there is no reddening, no peeling, and you can even apply make up immediately after BBL treatment. However, you MUST wear sunscreen in the week following as the light therapy causes your skin to be more sensitive to UV rays. More info on Forever Young BBL.

CO2 Fractional Laser Treatment Procedure

After the BBL treatment, I was given localised doses of CO2 Fractional Laser for acne scars on chin and large pores on nose. CO2 Fractional Laser is very effective for skin resurfacing to smoothen out wrinkles, lighten scars and stretch marks, and tighten sagging skin. It stimulates the body’s natural ability to synthesise collagen to repair depressions in skin. More info on CO2 Fractional Laser.

As compared to BBL, the CO2 laser felt a little more “hot”. What I found fascinating was that I could literally feel the tiny light beams being shot into my skin. However, there was still no pain factor, thanks to the numbing cream!

*What to expect after CO2 Fractional Laser*

There will be about 1 to 3 hours of downtime after a CO2 laser as the skin appears more reddish. Personally, my skin felt “sun-burned” and sore for about that amount of time too. Over the next few days, the skin will feel rough, and small dotted white marks (made by the light beams shot into the skin) will become more apparent on the treated areas. The roughness disappears, and the skin fully heals in about 5-7 days.

*After-care instructions after CO2 Fractional Laser*

Firstly, daily application of moisturiser is highly encouraged as the area will become dry and rough before it turns smooth again. There might also be some peeling, so moisturising will alleviate that. For me, I bought 20 daily masks from Etude House and applied one every night. :)

Secondly, try your best to avoid exposure to the sun. No sun-tanning, no excessive perspiring, no sauna, or activities that will cause increased blood flow to the treated areas. If you have to go out into the sun, you do have to apply sunscreen!

Results!!!

After just 1 session of the BBL, the hyperpigmentation on my cheeks have mostly faded, and my skin tone has become brighter. My skin is also smoother and has a youthful shine to it. Another amazing feature of this Laser is that the effects will continue to last for a long time. I am extremely happy with the results!

Now comes the time to evaluate my main concern, which is my active acne and scarring. Although the lasers will help with lightening the scars, Dr Soh said that addressing the root of the problem of my acne is still the best way to go. Otherwise new pimples will keep surfacing and leaving new marks; which is sort of what is happening now.

From the photos, you can see that 4 days after the treatments, the acne on my chin have largely healed, and the scars have lightened SO MUCH. However, the photo taken 1 month later shows that even though the old scars have disappeared, new angry acne have formed. But overall, there is definitely some improvement in the chin area. :)

Thank you Dr. Soh and team for the pleasant experience!
