Who can say that they have seen the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in person?? I CAN! Hahaha I was so happy when I found out that they were coming to Singapore that I was practically whining away the night before and demanding that I wanted to see them. Bratty I know. But it was just a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the Prince William and Kate in the flesh that suddenly became something I must do! Haha it was never on my bucket list, but it sort of just came along and so why not??
The Royal Highnesses’ visit to the Gardens by the Bay was announced to be one of those times that public will get to see them. So there was really a huge crowd when I got there about one hour earlier than the expected time of arrival 10am.
The Supertrees are the main feature of Gardens by the Bay, which is some sort of a vertical garden. The plants growing on the Supertrees are still young, but I suppose they will look much better when they are fully grown!
This was just a small portion of the crowd waiting to welcome Prince William and Kate. Many people were waiting in the sun and I read from articles that few fainted from waiting for close to three hours in the hot weather. Me? I decided to hide out in a shaded area.
Finally, at about 10:50 am, people started cheering. As the first buggy drove down the concrete path, we were all so excited because we thought it was them, but it was actually security personnel, and about 3 buggies in front were more security personnel. It was only the FOURTH/FIFTH buggy that carried the Duke and Duchess. I lost count.
I am so so happy to have been able to capture this photo. They drove by so fast that I admired them for only a few seconds and they were gone. My fingers went into autopilot and snapped whatever there was. Haha.
After they drove past, they stopped a little further away to alight and then started shaking hands with the crowd. Those people standing at the front line right behind the barricade got lucky! I was unsure of what to do next, but I followed everyone to where they were.
It then got very chaotic because everyone was trying to get a handshake, photo, video, etc. Being very short, and having to fight for space and camera space with everyone was soooo traumatic!
It’s gross when people have their armpits up and there’re all sorts of smell, and everyone was screaming away for the Duchess’ attention. It wasn’t pleasant.
BUT, but, it was all worth it! Haha I never felt so crazy about a person in my life before, and I have never chased after idols, but here I am, doing all the extreme acts for two people. Squeezing into the crowd, tiptoeing, trying to get a camera to the highest point to get photos. I was on fire.
Shall let you guys see how chaotic it was…
Most of my shots are of people’s arms. Haha it was just too crazy!
There were people with big cameras and even professional video recording ones (not shown here) vying for some picture space. I was only holding onto my iPhone. Haha I didn’t have the height, didn’t have the equipment.
Haha well, enough of photos of raised arms, though I have more of them.. I managed to snap some good ones of Prince William! :)
He was so close!! I was stuck on deciding whether to stick out my hand for a handshake or continue focusing on getting his face. Haha
And some not very good ones, hahahaha but I’ve drawn some arrows. I know my photos are horrible and you can hardly see anything, but it’s the experience that counts, and for me, it’s one box ticked off the bucket list to have seen them in person.
Looking back, I can’t believe I did something so crazy. It’s so unlike me, but all I know was that I am so very happy. And if given a chance, I would do it all over again. But, I would bring a tripod and a remote shutter control so that I can hold the tripod up and my camera would be the tallest among the rest! Hahaha.
Don’t be tricked by my demure appearance. Haha. It was fun! :D
I wish I could have gotten a handshake or even speak with them! Haha I was so close! @.@ Don’t judge me.
